Have you been wondering how a Christmas market river cruise would be for a family holiday vacation? Well, Christmas market river cruises are simply magical. And if I had to stop at one single reason why you should take one for a holiday vacation, that would be it. The kids, your parents, and even your friends, will love all the ambiance that surrounds you during this fabulous time of year. However, there are many other reasons why you should gather your family and take a Christmas market river cruise for a holiday vacation. Today, I am going to share those reasons with you, so you can see just how incredible these Christmas market river cruises truly are.

Christmas Market River Cruises: Reasons to Choose One for a Holiday Vacation

Celebrate the Magic of the Season During a Christmas Market River Cruise

One of the main reasons you should take a Christmas market river cruise is the one I already listed above. Celebrating the magic of the season is always better when you are in spectacular destinations around the world. There are plenty of Christmas markets in Europe. You can visit many of them during a river cruise too.

These Christmas markets are full of Christmas music, sparkling lights, decorations, and food. The ambiance at these markets is always lively. Fires are burning in fire pits or in barrels. Chestnuts are roasting. And the smell of gingerbread fills the air. Add in the locals laughing and having fun, and you have memories you will never forget.

Talk about an exciting way to celebrate the holidays with the people you love the most!

Check out these benefits of taking a Christmas market river cruise as a family.

Shop for Unique Gifts

Christmas Market River Cruise - Handmade Ornaments

Not everyone needs a scarf, toaster, or gift card as a present during the holidays. If you really want your gifts to stand out, purchase them at the Christmas markets you visit during a river cruise.

There are so many different gifts you can choose from. Handblown glass, wooden toys, and handmade ornaments are only a few things you can get during your visits at European Christmas markets.

Check out some of the most popular Christmas markets in Europe.

Opportunity to Drink Mulled Wine

Okay, so you can easily drink mulled wine at home. However, drinking mulled wine in Germany, or wherever you are visiting the Christmas markets, is a much better experience. Every vendor makes their mulled wine a little differently. It is best to try a few versions before declaring your all-time favorite.

Don’t want to wait to drink mulled wine?? Here is an excellent recipe for making it at home!

Spectacular Dining Options

There is always plenty of food available at Christmas markets. Over in Germany, you will find lebkuchen, schmalzkuchen, maroni, and pfannkuchen. Sausages, potato pancakes, and potato dumplings are also available from certain vendors.

Your family will never go hungry while visiting the Christmas markets during your river cruise vacation!

Experience Unique Holiday Cultures

You obviously have your own holiday cultures and traditions back home. When you take a Christmas market river cruise, your family will be introduced to so many other holiday cultures and traditions. You may decide that you want to include some of those new cultures and traditions in your holidays when you get back home. If not, at least you have the memories you made while learning about them all during your family holiday vacation.

Can’t escape to Europe this holiday season? Check out these Christmas markets right here in the US!

Check Out the Beautiful Scenery During a Christmas Market River Cruise

Christmas Market River Cruises - Salzburg Old City During Christmas

Nothing beats the scenery you can see while on a river cruise. Especially during the holiday season. As the riverboat floats down the river, you can look at all the landscape along the way. Most of the time, the buildings will be all decked out for the holidays.

Keep your camera ready, as you enjoy the views from the deck, or your room, while sailing down the river during your Christmas market cruise.

Experience Fewer Crowds

So, the Christmas markets you visit during your river cruise will definitely be crowded. However, every other attraction you visit will have fewer people. This means you won’t find yourself waiting in long lines. You won’t need to rush. And you can see more in a shorter amount of time.

These are the best reasons to take a Christmas market river cruise for a holiday vacation. I am sure you will discover many other reasons, as you are making memories with your family!

I am currently booking clients for a December 2025 Christmas market river cruise. So, are you ready to book this Christmas market river cruise, or one for 2026, for your next holiday vacation?

Are you ready to take your family on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation during the holidays? But do you have no idea where to go or what to do? Well, I have you covered! First, I would like to recommend checking out the amazing Christmas Markets in Germany. These authentic Christmas markets will have you enjoying the holiday season with family while making memories. Plus, you get to see new destinations at the same time. There are so many ways to see the different Christmas Markets in Germany. My favorite way is by river cruise. But as a travel advisor, I can recommend other options if boats are not part of your family vacation plans.

Amazing Christmas Markets in Germany for Your Family Holiday

Würzburg Christmas Market

Amazing Christmas Markets in Germany for Your Family Holiday

The Christmas Market in Würzburg began back in the early 19th century. There are at least one hundred wooden stalls filled with handmade gifts, food, and so much more. I recommend visiting as many of these stalls as possible to see all the amazing items for sale.

When you are not eating Christmas cookies and sipping Glühwein, you may find yourself shopping for a few gifts. Wooden toys, pottery, hand-knit gloves, and traditional Christmas decorations are some of the more popular items to purchase at this market.

If the market does not have enough options for you, I recommend heading over to the Town Hall. During Advent, artisans sell their handcrafted items there on Saturdays and Sundays. You can easily create fabulous memories during this family holiday vacation!

Check out these amazing Christmas traditions your family can experience around the world while on vacation!

Nuremberg Christkindlmarkt

One of the more traditional Christkindlesmarkts in Germany is the one located in Nuremberg. According to historians, this Christmas market began back in the early 17th century.

A parade goes through Nuremberg’s central square, Hauptmarkt. The main attraction of the parade is the holy cherub, Christkind.

A couple of the specialty items you can purchase at the Nuremberg Christmas market in Germany include clothes made from local wood, fruit jams, and different brandies.

Munich’s Marienplatz Christmas Market

Munich’s Marienplatz Christmas Market is surrounded by historic buildings. Hundreds of wooden stalls are constructed for this holiday event each year. And those stalls are decorated with glowing lights, garlands, and ornaments.

If you still need gifts for your family, I recommend purchasing a few hand-painted glass ornaments. You might want to wait until you have finished eating the roasted chestnuts and stollen and drinking your mulled wine though. That way, you can carry your purchases a little easier.

Cologne’s Cathedral Christmas Market

Amazing Christmas Markets in Germany for Your Family Holiday - Christmas Market in Cologne Germany

Cologne. GERMANY.

The Cathedral Christmas Market is located at the Gothic Cathedral. A massive Christmas tree is in the middle of all the festivities.

This Christmas market is decorated with lights, ornaments, and red ribbons. Live music can be heard in the background. Listen to it as your family wanders around to check out all the different vendors.

Searching for Christmas Spirit? Check out these family friendly destinations!

Aachen’s Town Hall Christmas Market

The city of Aachen is close to the border of both the Netherlands and Belgium. So, it shouldn’t be surprising if you see a couple of different traditions at this Christmas market.

The squares around City Hall are where this Christmas market in Germany is located. I recommend taking a ride on the carousel before indulging in Aachener Printen. Spices and caramelized sugar are mixed together to create this holiday drink.

Hamburg Christmas Markets

A family vacation in Hamburg will have you visiting multiple Christmas markets during the holiday season. The main market is Weihnachtsmarkt, which is near City Hall. It is one of the more traditional options.

Winterwald Market is within the Mönckebergbrunnen shopping district. This magical Christmas Forest wonderland offers a slightly different vibe.

Heidelberg Christmas Markets

The Heidelberg Christmas Market is the perfect addition to Old Town during the holiday season. The ruins of a castle loom over the wooden stalls. That same castle seems to glow at night from the lights hanging on the stalls.

This is one of the more romantic Christmas markets in Germany. If your kids are old enough, you can let them skate on the Karlsplatz ice rink alone as you take a spin with your partner. Once you are all finished ice skating, you can shop for souvenirs and grab a bite to eat.

Feel the Christmas spirit while on a family vacation in these destinations.

Leipzig Old Town Christmas Market

This Christmas market in Germany is not as well-known as a few of the others. So, it may be the perfect place for your family to start exploring.

There are three hundred vendors at this Christmas market though. So, you will need to take your time if you want to see even a fraction of them during your family vacation in Germany.

Younger kids will love wandering through the fairy tale forest. You will prefer the traditional German food the vendors at this market serve.

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt

The Christmas Market in Dresden began back in the 15th century. This market is in Old Town.

The River Elbe flows in the distance, adding to the ambiance. A unique feature at this market is the Plaumentoffel. This is a decorative figure created from prunes.

You will also see the largest Christmas pyramid in the country at this Christmas market in Germany.

Stuttgart’s Marktplatz

The five major squares in Stuttgart are turned into fabulous Christmas markets each year. Each square contains one Christmas market.

Traditional experiences are everywhere at these markets. I recommend beginning your adventure at Wintertraum Markt. This Christmas market is in front of Old Palace. It is an excellent place to try lebkuchen or eat roasted chestnuts if your family is not ready to try new foods.

These are some of the amazing Christmas Markets, or Christkindlesmrkts, in Germany. But there are quite a few others your family can visit too. As a travel advisor, I can help you determine which Christmas markets in Germany should be on your family travel itinerary. I can also recommend the best ways to see the markets on your list during your family vacation.

As I mentioned above, one of my favorite ways to check out the Christmas Markets in Germany is by river cruise. I would love to book one of those incredible river cruises for your family! They are perfect for making memories and experiencing the world with the people you love the most.

So, are you ready to check out the Christmas Markets in Germany while taking a river cruise?

One of the best ways to see France is via an epic cruise. This travel option will have your family seeing multiple sights along the Rhone and Saone Rivers. This unique family vacation will allow you to make memories you wouldn’t be able to anywhere else in the world. Today, I am sharing an itinerary of an epic cruise that will take your family from Burgundy to Provence. You don’t need to choose the exact same itinerary for your cruise. As I am planning your epic cruise, I can personalize your itinerary, so everyone in your family gets to do their favorite things while on vacation.

Read all about why river cruising is so much better than an ocean cruise

Take an Epic Cruise from Burgundy to Provence with Your Amazing Family

Day One: Chalon-Sur-Saone

Depending on when your flight arrives, you may have time for a little sightseeing before boarding the ship for your river cruise. After unpacking in your cabin, you can wander around the ship and enjoy a delicious dinner.

Day Two: Tournus

Overnight, the ship will have sailed to Tournus. It will arrive in port while you are still sleeping. Be prepared to be in a new destination already when you wake up in the morning.

After a hearty breakfast, you will head out into town with your local tour guide. They will show you the sights throughout town before returning you to the ship. However, I recommend taking the time to also visit the Castle of Cormatin or enjoy a wine tasting in a Chardonnay wine cellar before getting back on board.

Day Three: Lyon

Take an Epic Cruise from Burgundy to Provence with Your Amazing Family - View of Lyon France from Fourviere

You will arrive in Lyon after breakfast on day three of your epic cruise with family. Use this downtime to relax a little.

When you arrive in Lyon, you will have a choice of either a bike ride along the banks of the Rhone and Saone Rivers or a visit to Fourviere Hill. The latter will have you exploring Old Town, as well as the fountain of Places des Terreaux.

Day Four: Lyon

You will stay in Lyon for part of another day during your epic cruise. Spend the day exploring on your own. Or join a culinary walking tour to try some of the local cuisine.

The ship will leave port early in the evening to sail to your next destination. Spend this time enjoying the activities on the ship.

Day Five: Tournon and Viviers

You will spend the morning in Tournon. Spend this time taking a guided walking tour to see the best sights in this medieval city.

After a leisurely lunch, the ship will sail to Viviers where you can also take a guided walking tour. Live entertainment will be available back on the ship after dinner.

Day Six: Avignon

You have a few options for your time in Avignon. A guided tour will take you to the Palace of the Popes. Or you can visit the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard or the wine cellars of Chateauneuf-du-Pape for a wine tasting.

Another option is to simply explore this area on your own. You can visit a museum or watch a show at the theater.

Day Seven: Arles

You will be in Arles in the morning, which means another walking tour. If you decide not to walk another step, you can always participate in a painting workshop. This workshop will teach you how to paint like Vincent van Gogh.

No matter what you do, I recommend stopping in Le Café van Gogh for a glass of wine before heading back to the ship.

Day Eight: Arles

Your ship will still be in Arles when you wake up on the last day of your epic cruise with family. You will have traveled from Burgundy to Provence over the last few days, making memories you will cherish forever.

There are so many other river cruises available in France and the rest of Europe. I can help you plan one that will have your family excited to be traveling together. Here’s my guide to the best European cruise lines to get you started, as you consider this type of family vacation.

Incredible 8 Day Christmas Market River Cruise in Germany

Day One: Nuremberg

Upon your arrival at Nuremberg Airport, you will be met by a driver who will take you to your hotel. You will have two days at the hotel in Nuremberg before you board the boat for the river cruise. This will give you ample time to immerse yourself into the culture and traditions of this German city.

This first day can be used to explore Nuremberg on your own. Or you can take a nap to get over jet lag and enjoy the amenities the hotel offers.

Day Two: Nuremberg

Incredible 8 Day Christmas Market River Cruise in Germany - Gingerbread Cookies

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, it will be time to learn how to make authentic German gingerbread. Have a few laughs with your family, as you all learn how to mix the dough before rolling it out. Decorate your gingerbread as you want before indulging in a bite or two.

A brewery tour is the perfect way to spend the afternoon over in Bamberg. It’s not that far of a drive from Nuremberg. You will have time to explore the village on your own after your brewery tour.

Day Three: Nuremberg

You have one last morning to spend on your own in Nuremberg before boarding the boat for your Christmas market river cruise. Spend it on a tour of the city. Or head over to the Memorium of the Nuremberg Trials.

Before you know it, you will be headed to the river cruise boat for a holiday adventure with your family. Spend the rest of the day getting things organized in your room and learning where everything is on the boat.

It’s also a great day to get to know a few of the others who will be cruising with you. Some of them may become lifelong friends!

Day Four: Nuremberg

Yes, you are still in Nuremberg for this first day of your river cruise in Germany. However, today it is all about the Christmas market in this German city! This is an excellent day to get started on your holiday shopping.

Just don’t forget to stop at the vendors for some bratwurst, mulled blueberry wine, and gingerbread. There are so many other foods to try while taking a river cruise in Germany. Taste as many as you can, so you can choose your all-time favorite.

After your Christmas market adventure, you can choose to take a guided tour of Nuremberg. Most people prefer the tour of the Gothic Cathedral and Kaiserburg Castle. However, a tour of the Nuremberg Rally Grounds is also available.

Day Five: Bamberg

While in Bamberg, take a guided tour of the different nativity scenes throughout the village. Some of them are miniatures, while others are quite life-size. Then grab a few German dumplings and a Bavarian ale to enjoy while walking around the Christmas market in the village.

Day Six: Wurzburg

Incredible 8 Day Christmas Market River Cruise in Germany - Kathe Wolhfahrt German Christmas Museum

There are so many different activities you can do during a Christmas market river cruise in Germany in addition to shopping at the Christmas markets.

As tempting as it may be to spend the entire day exploring Wurzburg, you may prefer to check out the Kathe Wohlfahrt German Christmas Museum. This museum is in the town of Rothenburg. It contains the world’s most extensive collection of traditional German Christmas decorations.

If you do decide to skip the museum, you can tour the “Pearl of the Romantic Road” in Wurzburg. The towering fortress, Bishop’s residence, and Old Main Bridge will keep you busy for a couple hours. Afterwards, you can check out the Christmas market in this German town.

Day Seven: Main River Village

Your family will get to spend the entire morning exploring Main River Village in Germany. Your tour guide will make sure you don’t miss any of the unique sights within this beautiful destination.

When you return to the ship, you will have some downtime, as it begins to sail to Frankfurt for the final day of your family vacation.

Day Eight: Frankfurt

This is the last day of your Christmas market river cruise in Germany. You will have arrived in Frankfurt in the early morning hours. Depending on the time of your flight home, you may have a little time to explore this beautiful city and see the Christmas market there.

Do you have a bunch of foodies in your house? If you are one of the lucky parents that do, you will be thrilled with all the foods you can try while on a family vacation. If you aren’t, well, there’s nothing stopping you from devouring these foods on your own! Whether you choose to roam the streets of Paris, wander the vineyards in Tuscany, or take a river cruise in Germany, there will always be new foods to try. Today, I am going to focus on all the yummy foods to try during a river cruise in Germany.

Amazing Foods to Try During a River Cruise in Germany

Wurst

Okay, so Wurst is a sausage. There are dozens of wurst variations in Germany. If you want to stick with the basics, start by eating a bratwurst during a river cruise in Germany. A bratwurst is basically ground pork and spices.

If you are ready to be a little more adventurous with your eating, try rost bratwurst and currywurst. Or one of the other wursts you come across during your vacation in Germany.

Apfelstrudel

If desserts are more your thing, take a few bites of apfelstrudel. I guarantee you won’t be able to stop with those few bites, though!

This dessert is made with apples and thin pastry, as well as sugar and cinnamon. Some people will add raisins, too, so ask first if you are not a fan of raisins. It is best to eat apfelstrudel warm. Although, cold will work too.

Brezel

The brezel in Germany is also called brezeln. It is basically a pretzel that is served as a snack or side dish. They are popular to eat in bars while drinking a beer. The best brezels are soft and white with salt.

Schnitzel

Foods to Try During a River Cruise in Germany - Schnitzel

Schnitzel is a thin cut of meat that has been breaded before being cooked. There are many different versions of schnitzel dishes. The most popular version is the Weiner schnitzel. It is breaded veal served with a fried egg on top.

Kaesespaetzle

This simple dish is basically noodles covered in mild cheese with roasted onions mixed in. Kaesespaetzle is usually made to order. Therefore, it is usually very hot when placed in front of you at the table.

Bratkartoffeln

These are German fries, or what we know as fried potatoes. Potatoes, bacon, and onion are all fried together in butter until everything is nice and crispy. Even your pickiest eaters shouldn’t have anything to complain about when it comes to bratkartoffeln.

Kartoffelknödel

To stay with a potato theme, how about kartoffelknödel? These potato dumplings are made with potatoes, seasonings, and croutons. The dumplings are boiled before being served with different sauces.

Baurenbrot

Baurenbrot is farmer’s bread in Germany. This hearty bread is made from rye flour and a German bread spice that includes caraway and fennel. This is the perfect bread to eat when you know you need to fill up for a day of exploring during your river cruise in Germany.

These are some of the amazing foods you should try during a river cruise in Germany. Hopefully, you have food lovers in your family because it will make eating these dishes much easier. If you don’t, let them eat the foods you usually eat while you choose to eat these yummy German foods during your family vacation! There are other European river cruise routes to choose from if Germany doesn’t interest you. We can always discuss those options instead.

So, are you ready to plan a river cruise in Germany and eat these foods?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Do you want to plan and book a family vacation your kids will love? Maybe you want to invite the grandparents along? Or your grandchildren? If you are looking for the perfect multigenerational vacation, I have the solution! I recommend booking a river cruise. These cruises are perfect for kids of all ages. Older adults enjoy the activities on and off the ships too. I have personally been on a few river cruises with my kids. And let me tell you, they had an amazing time and told me they would be more than willing to go on more of these types of family vacations. Let me share a few more reasons why river cruises are perfect for multigenerational vacations.

Reasons Why River Cruises are Perfect for Multigenerational Vacations

Smaller Ships

Some of the major cruise lines have ships that are the size of small cities. A river cruise ship isn’t as big. Don’t worry; they are big enough to give you the space you need. You just won’t need to walk miles to reach the area where an activity is being held.

These smaller ships are perfect for older adults who may not want to walk too far when on board. Especially when they are trying to find the rest of their family. Or just grab a bite to eat.

Plenty of Menu Options

Speaking of food, everything you eat on the ship is included in the cost of your river cruise. There are plenty of menu options to choose from. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something they like to eat when they are hungry.

This will make mealtime a breeze when traveling with extended family.

Different Cultural and Learning Experiences

The entire family will love spending time together learning new things. On a river cruise, you can all attend the same programs or activities. This will allow you all to learn new things and then discuss what you learned later.

Age Specific Activities

As much as you all may love each other, time apart is always good while on a family vacation. Thankfully, most river cruise lines offer activities for all age groups. The kids may want to participate in one activity while you head over to another area of the ship to do something else. Your parents may be interested in a different activity or taking a nap and getting a little downtime.

Connecting Staterooms and Suites

River cruise lines understand that while families want to travel together, they don’t always want to be in the same room. They created connecting staterooms and suites for this purpose. You can easily book connecting rooms, so the kids have their own space, and you have yours. Suites will serve the same purpose.

Grandparents can have their own stateroom or choose to be in a connecting room.

Family Friendly Amenities

Multigenerational Activities on a River Cruise - Karaoke Night

Many of the river cruise ships have a movie theater, as well as an area filled with board games. Add in karaoke nights, activity nights, and themed nights, and no one in your family will be bored. Your kids may even be able to sign up for cooking classes and workshops.

These are the main reasons why a river cruise is perfect for multigenerational vacations. You will find many other benefits in my post about taking a Christmas Market river cruise as a family. I am more than willing to share my experiences with you as well, when we start discussing and planning your next family vacation via river cruise.

Does your family love to choose unique destinations for family vacations? Maybe you have all decided you don’t want to visit France, the Grand Canyon, or Disney World this year. If that is the case, maybe a unique river cruise destination should be at the top of your list! There are a few unique destinations you can visit while cruising on some of the best rivers in the world. I could go on and on about all the memories you can make during one of these family vacations. However, it is probably best to share the unique destinations you should be considering for this year’s vacation!

Unique River Cruise Destinations to Consider for a Family Vacation

Africa

The Zambezi flows through numerous African destinations. This is why so many river cruises can be found on this stretch of the river.

If you have always wanted to see parts of Africa up close, a river cruise is your best option. The wonders of Chobe National Park will no longer be a mystery to your family. Of course, you won’t want to miss out on the sights of Victoria Falls. You will be as close as you can possibly be to the edge of these falls without ever being in danger of going over. The only downside is you won’t see the actual falls from the ship. Only the rushing water leads to those falls.

A few destinations you may get to experience on an African river cruise include Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

Egypt

A river cruise in Egypt will take you down, or up, the Nile River. I recommend spending a little time in the bustling city of Cairo before boarding the ship and traveling to Aswan. This area is full of wonderful villages, temples, and museums.

You can choose the excursions that interest your family the most. However, I suggest making sure the Animalia Museum and Sharia-as-Souq are on your list of things to do.

Cambodia

Floating Village - Tonle Sap Lake

Asia is one of the best continents for river cruising. Especially if your family is interested in downtime as well as thrilling adventures. If that is what you are searching for during your next family vacation, let me suggest a river cruise in Cambodia.

Taking a river cruise along the Mekong is the perfect way to explore Cambodia. Your family can experience the local traditions in Siem Reap. Explore the temples of Angkor. Wander through bustling markets. Visit a floating village on Tonle Sap Lake.

There is no limit to what you can do each day as you take a river cruise along the shores of Cambodia.

Vietnam

You can also sail down the Mekong River to visit different destinations in Vietnam. These river cruises usually begin in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. It is dependent on the direction your family is cruising. During this family adventure, you will find yourself exploring spectacular towns and villages like Tan Chau, Sa Dec, and Cai Be. Visiting sacred sites will be possible in many of these areas.

While a river cruise in Vietnam is amazing, I prefer to make sure I see parts of Laos and Cambodia at the same time. I mean, if you are over in that part of the world, you might as well see as much as possible!

China

Taking a river cruise on the Yangtze River guarantees a stop in the fascinating city of Chongqing. While there are other destinations you will visit on this family-friendly river cruise, this is the city that will really capture your attention.

Imagine spending time with the Giant Pandas at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Explore the Three Gorges. Hike through the Wulong Karst Geological Park. Indulge in all the culinary delights China has to offer. Including the spicy hot pot. You may even be interested in doing a little shopping at Ciqikou Old Town. It is one of the best places to buy pastries, as well as porcelain pieces.

South America

Exploring South America by ship is as easy as sailing along the Amazon River. This majestic waterway begins in Peru and flows all the way to the Atlantic. All around the Amazon River is an area known as The Amazon. It is a massive rainforest filled with animals and plants.

Time on an Amazon river cruise can be spent in so many ways. Take a tour of Kenko and the Temple of Sacsayhuaman. Be amazed at the top of Machu Picchu. Check out the Nazca Lines. Oh, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the pink dolphins in the water. Your family will even have a chance to swim with them during your river cruise adventure.

These are a few unique river cruise destinations you should consider for your next family vacation. Each destination offers fabulous attractions, sights, and activities to keep your family intrigued for hours. Let me help your family make memories by planning a fascinating river cruise to your top destination. I guarantee the result will be a family vacation you never forget!

So, are you ready to book a river cruise to one of these unique destinations for your next family vacation?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Do you love heading out on adventures with your family? If you said yes, you are not alone. Family vacations are the number one way to spend time together and have fun! There are so many options when it comes to what you can do for these vacations. I love going on cruises with my kids. We get to see numerous destinations at once. The food options are plentiful. And we never need to switch hotels at each new destination. Plus, we can choose our favorite excursions. If you want to cruise with your family, I recommend considering a European river cruise. There are quite a few river cruise routes to choose from. This means you can venture out to the European destinations that are calling you the most.

European River Cruise Routes for Your Next Family Vacation

Rhine River

The Rhine River is 820 miles long. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising there are at least three different river cruise routes to choose from. The length of the river also ensures you can see parts of up to six countries. The countries you visit during your next family vacation would be dependent on the river cruise route you choose.

A river cruise on the lower Rhine will take you along the shorelines of the Netherlands and Belgium. Stops in the Netherlands are usually made in Amsterdam, Edam, Neukenhof, Kinderduk, and Willemstad. In Belgium, you will find yourself exploring the areas of Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Brugges.

I personally love visiting the Netherlands during the spring. This is when the tulips are in full bloom. Everything is pretty and colorful. Add in the windmills, and you have Instagram-worthy photos to share.

Another river cruise route on the Rhine will take you from The Netherlands all the way down to Switzerland. This journey will take you along the shorelines of those two countries, as well as Germany and France. It is an excellent way to check four countries off your bucket list while making memories with your family.

If you are only interested in Germany, you will love the river cruise route that takes you from Trier to Nuremberg. It is one of the most popular European river cruise routes. Especially if you want to learn more about the country and the people who live there.

Cologne Cathedral beyond River Rhine

The Danube

The Danube is even longer than the Rhine River. Yet, it isn’t even the longest European river. It comes in at number two.

This European River is normally divided into two routes for river cruises. The Upper Danube is the river cruise route that is chosen the most by travelers. So, you will find the most available cruises there.

This route will take you to four countries. Your family vacation will begin in the Czech Republic before continuing to Germany, Austria, and Hungary. During your stops, you will have the opportunity to visit villages, capital cities, castles, Abbeys, and other attractions.

The Lower Danube takes you through Eastern Europe. Your family adventure will begin in Budapest and end at the entrance to the Black Sea. Everyone will fall in love with the views of Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, and Romania.

The Seine

Heading into Normandy is simple when you take a river cruise along The Seine. This river cruise route will take your family through Giverny, Honfleur, and Rouen. Plus, numerous medieval towns in between. The highlight of this family adventure is always visiting the D-Day Normandy beaches.

This is a fabulous European river cruise option for those who love history.

The Rhone

Exploring the country of France is easy when you choose to take a river cruise on The Rhone. Your adventures will take you through the wine regions of Cote du Rhone and Beaujolais. You won’t want to miss the beauty in Avignon or the history in Arles.

This is a wonderful European river cruise for those who love fine wines and delicious cuisine. Don’t worry; the kids will love every minute too. Even if they are younger and can’t drink.

The Douro

The Douro is a river that will take you along the shoreline of Portugal. This family river cruise will normally begin in Porto. Other destinations normally include Salamanca, Regua, Sintra, and Lisbon. You may even stop in a couple of fishing villages that dot the shoreline of the Douro.

While this river cruise route takes you through wine country, the entire family will have a good time. Especially once they start tasting all the Portuguese cuisine that is available along the way.

Dordogne and Garonne Rivers

The Dordogne and Garonne Rivers are part of river cruise routes in France. They are the perfect European river cruise option if you want to spend more time on land than out on the water. In fact, this is the European river cruise I would recommend if you are a first-time river cruiser who isn’t sure how the family will feel about it.

The best part about this river cruise is the two nights your family will get to spend in Bordeaux.

I highly recommend considering taking this river cruise during the months of September or October. That is when the grape harvest takes place. This is an activity your entire family won’t want to miss seeing!

These are the best European river cruise routes you should consider for your next family vacation. You can easily visit the countries you want to see the most while enjoying time out on the water at the same time. I would love to help plan a European river cruise for your family, so you can make memories that will last a lifetime.  Check out my guide to the best European river cruise lines. It will help get you started thinking about exactly how you want this family vacation to be.

Cruising the Hawaiian Islands during your next family vacation will add so many magical memories to your time away from home. As a travel advisor, I can create the perfect Hawaiian cruise itinerary for your family’s vacation needs. This means you get to learn about more than the basic excursions that are available in the ports. Plus, I can help you avoid those cruise lines that simply travel around the Hawaiian Islands with minimal stops. After all, don’t you want to experience all the different Hawaiian Islands instead of just cruising past them?!

My Two Favorite Options for Cruising the Hawaiian Islands During Family Vacations

I have two favorite options for cruising the Hawaiian Islands during family vacations. The first option is a large cruise line, while the other is a smaller ship cruise. Each one has its own benefits, although honestly, I prefer the additional TLC you receive on the smaller ship cruises.

Large Cruise Line for Cruising the Hawaiian Islands

There is only one major cruise line that makes stops in the Hawaiian Islands. And since I know you want to spend time on these islands instead of simply passing by, I know this will be an incredible Hawaiian cruising option for your family!

During this Hawaiian cruise, you will spend time on four of the Hawaiian Islands. Your family will begin this journey in Honolulu, Oahu. From there, you will sail to Kaului, Maui, for two days. This will be the time to venture over to Kaanapali Beach or even make the drive along the Honoapiilani Highway. I recommend going for a hike deep in the jungle if you are willing to get into such a strenuous workout. And if you aren’t, you can simply do a little snorkeling or swimming instead.

Day four will have you arriving in Hilo, Hawaii, and I highly recommend you wake up in time to watch the sunrise from the deck. A trip on the Hilo hop on hop off tour bus will get you to all the major attractions on the eastern side of this Hawaiian Island. So, if Rainbow Falls, Downtown Hilo, and Big Island Candies are on your to-do list, we will make sure this is part of your itinerary. However, you may prefer to spend your time over in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The following day will have your ship arriving on the western side of the island at the port of Kona. After a short boat ride to shore, you can spend the entire day in the water. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and paddleboarding are only a couple of the water sports you can enjoy during this day’s adventures. If you do not want to spend all day in the water, though, I recommend making time to ride in a buggy to the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. There you will discover heiau temples, kii, which are wooden statues, and hale, which are thatched structures.

Day six and part of day seven are spent in Lihue, Kauai. Helicopter rides are best on this underdeveloped island. Taking a ride on one will allow you to see panoramic views of the Napali Coast, Jurassic Park Falls, and Waimea Canyon. You can also drive through the Tunnel of Trees or simply relax on the beach during your last few hours on this Hawaiian Island.

Day eight has you returning to Honolulu, Oahu, but that doesn’t mean this magical journey must end. Instead, I can book a couple of thrilling adventures and extend your time away from home a little longer.

Small Ship Cruise Line for Cruising the Hawaiian Islands

As I mentioned above, taking a smaller cruise ship to the Hawaiian Islands is my preferred choice for exploring this gorgeous destination. There are only 36 passengers on board, so you get a lot of extra one-on-one time during your cruise.

This cruise ship also visits four of the Hawaiian Islands. The islands you will spend time on include Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Your Hawaiian adventures will begin with two days in Molokai. There are no stoplights or rush hours on this Hawaiian Island. Instead, you will be met with tranquil surroundings, as well as the locals who are more than ready to share their cultures and traditions. While you can explore the Molokai Museum and learn how to make poi, I recommend hiking to the rushing waterfall in Halawa’s Cathedral Valley.

It is all about the island of Lanai on day three of this eight-day Hawaiian Island adventure. This day is all about relaxing in between thrilling activities. I suggest you begin with a visit to Sweetheart Rock before walking over to the Lanai Culture and Heritage Center. Here you will learn about plantation days on the island. Before you head back to your ship, you can spend time swimming, snorkeling, or even kayaking.

Maui is waiting for you on day four of your Hawaiian cruise. It is best to spend most of your day in the water as you explore the Humpback National Marine Sanctuary. You will have the opportunity to see dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life during your visit. And if you plan your cruise just right, you may spot different whales too! Before you leave Maui, you may wish to take a little time to wander around the historic town of Lahaina.

The captain of the ship is in charge of the day’s activities on day five of your Hawaiian cruise. Depending on the weather, time of the year, and a few other factors, your captain will take you to where the best adventures are! You may have the chance to see massive volcanoes in the distance. Perhaps even watch whales and dolphins right next to the ship, and so much more.

Day six will have your ship docking on the Kona Coast. This is where the Pu’uhonua O Hanoanau National Historical Park and Koloko-Honokohau National Historic Park are located. The kids will love becoming Hawaii Junior Rangers as they hike to discover petroglyphs and what remains of the Aiopio fish trap.

You will have numerous options for your time in the Puu Waawaa State Wildlife Sanctuary on day seven. If you are up for a true adventure, you must hike the trail that takes you six thousand feet up the Hualalai Volcano. You will find yourself passing lava tubes, even entering one if you wish, and looking carefully into a pit crater. And if you want a more low-key adventure, there are shorter hikes available that still have you seeing lava tubes and craters.

Your journey ends in Kona in the early morning hours of day eight. I can extend your time in Kona, so you do not need to rush home after this fun and yet relaxing time with your family.

As you can see, there are ways to cruise to Hawaii and see the islands. This means you can easily see multiple islands without the hassle of taking an airplane to each individual island. Plus, you will have so much time on each island when you take a Hawaiian cruise. This is because you travel between islands at night when you are sleeping. This means full days of island adventures with your family instead of hours in airports waiting for your flights!

Are you ready to take a Hawaiian cruise during your next family vacation?

If you are ready, I would love to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. This will take you directly to my digital calendar to set up a time that is convenient for you.

And if you haven’t made up your mind about how you want to see the Hawaiian Islands just yet, you can sign up for my newsletter here. This way, we can stay in touch as I share more travel information in the future.

Christmas is a holiday many people around the world celebrate. As you are probably aware, every country seems to have its own traditions when it comes to this holiday. Over in Germany, the locals take their Christmas traditions very seriously. Yes, they spend time with family and friends. Yes, they make Christmas feasts. And yes, they have special celebrations. However, they have many other traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Taking a Christmas market river cruise in Germany with your family is one of the best ways to learn about that country’s local traditions.

Christmas Traditions to Embrace During a Christmas Market River Cruise in Germany

Advent Wreaths

Advent wreaths are made exactly four Sundays prior to Christmas in Germany. The locals make these wreaths out of fir or pine branches. Four candles are always placed in the center of the wreaths.

German families will light one of the candles on each Sunday leading up to Christmas.

Follow the instructions here to make your own advent wreath this year.

Advent Calendars

Advent calendars are also popular in Germany. One flap on the calendar is opened every day to reveal a Christmas scene.

St. Nicholas Day

Another Christmas tradition happens on the evening of December 5th when all the children in Germany leave their clean and polished boots outside their door before they fall asleep. St. Nicholas then fills those boots with candy, nuts, and small gifts. The kids find these gifts in the morning when they wake up and race to find their shoes.

Epiphany

The holiday celebrations continue until January 6th in Germany. This is the religious day known as the Three Kings Festival. The religious feast that day is called Epiphany.

On this day, it is common for the kids to dress up as the Magi. They then go from house to house as they sing songs.

Christmas Markets

Obviously, your river cruise in Germany will include multiple Christmas markets during the holiday season. Christmas markets are popular in Germany, as well as throughout Europe.

Germany was actually one of the first countries to have Christmas markets. There are a few thousand Christmas markets held in Germany every year. Don’t worry; you won’t be visiting them all during your river cruise. However, you will be spending time at some of the best Christmas markets in Germany!

Your family will love the twinkling lights. Roasting chestnuts. Mulled wine. And visits from St. Nicholas himself at each market you visit. This is probably the one Christmas tradition in Germany you will embrace the most during your family vacation.

Christmas Angels

Christmas angels are also called weihnachtsengel in Germany. These Christmas ornaments are one of the best traditions in the country. The Christmas angels are placed on the trees, as well as all around the house, during the holiday season.

These ornaments are usually made from wood. You will find thousands of them at all the Christmas markets you visit during your river cruise.

Christmas Stollen

You cannot celebrate Christmas in Germany and not eat any Christmas stollen. This cake is made from flour mixed with different fruits, nuts, and spices. Powdered sugar is then sprinkled over the top. There is a massive Christmas stollen festival held in Dresden each year.

You can make your own Christmas stollen with your family this year. Simply follow this recipe.

Lebkuchen

Another sweet tradition in Germany is lebkuchen. It is gingerbread in the shape of a heart. You may find lebkuchen with holiday messages written on them at the markets.

Christmas Songs

The most popular Christmas song in Germany is Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! This song was first played in a small church in Austria back in 1818. You may know this song’s English name is Silent Night.

Christmas Pyramids

Christmas pyramids are one of the oldest traditions in Germany. These wooden pyramids have a nativity scene with angels. The carousel part of the pyramid is surrounded by candles. When those candles are lit, they trigger the carousel to spin.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees have been popular in Germany since the 16th century. Back then, small fir trees were decorated on December 24th. The Germans used nuts, apples, and paper flowers as their decorations.

This tradition has evolved over the years. Nowadays, not every German family waits until Christmas Eve to decorate their tree. You will also find elaborately decorated Christmas trees in towns around the country, as well as at the numerous Christmas markets.

These are the Christmas traditions your family will want to embrace during a Christmas market river cruise in Germany. You will make many memories with your family during this holiday cruise. Let me make your holiday season magical by booking this amazing river cruise for your family.
