Did you know you can combine an amazing family vacation in Kentucky with the Kentucky Derby? As a travel advisor, I have made it my goal to make sure parents get all those memory-making moments while on family vacations with their kids. You don’t even need to travel halfway across the world to accomplish this. You can easily reach your goal of making memories with your kids in nearby states like Kentucky. I know not a lot of people consider Kentucky for family vacations. I am bringing it up as a possibility, though, because the Kentucky Derby isn’t too far away. Therefore, if you want to take a family vacation in the beginning of May, keep the state of Kentucky in mind.

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby During a Family Vacation

There is a lot you may want to learn about the wonderful state of Kentucky. You will be surprised what I learned while researching the Kentucky Derby and other family friendly activities in this state.

Kentucky Derby

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby During a Family Vacation - Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky

The Kentucky Derby is the oldest horse race in the world. However, you may hear this race referred to as “The Run for the Roses”. This is because the winning horse is draped in a garland of roses.

This race was established in 1875. The race is on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race itself is one and a quarter miles long.

Elaborate hats are worn for all the Kentucky Derby festivities. And you will see numerous people drinking mint juleps, which is the traditional drink of the derby.

The kids will love watching the horse racing at Churchill Downs. However, if they are a little hesitant, let them know that the next activity on your itinerary is visiting the Louisville Slugger Museum. That will keep their frowns to a minimum!

Check out the two museums I recommend everyone visits while on family vacations in Kentucky.

Firsts in the State of Kentucky Besides the Kentucky Derby

  • Post-It Notes originated in Cynthiana, Kentucky.
  • The very first Mother’s Day was held in Kentucky in the 1880s. It was at that time a teacher, Mary Wilson, recognized her mother. Mother’s Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1916.
  • The first restaurant to serve cheeseburgers was Kaelin’s in Louisville in 1934.
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken started in Corbin, Kentucky.
  • Patty and Mildred Hill wrote the song, Happy Birthday, in Kentucky. Surprisingly, it took a while for the song to become as popular as it is today.

See the must-visit bourbon and whiskey distilleries in Louisville.

Fun Facts About the State of Kentucky

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby During a Family Vacation - Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky

  • Thomas Edison showed off his light bulb to the public at the Southern Exposition in Louisville in 1883.
  • Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky.
  • Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest cave system in the entire world.
  • Kentucky was originally a county within the state of Virginia. It became its own state in 1792.
  • The Kentucky Bend is comprised of 17 square miles. It is part of the state of Kentucky, but it is not attached to the rest of the state. A couple of people who live there must drive 40 miles actually to find themselves in another part of the state.
  • The World Peace Bell is located in Newport, Kentucky.
  • Covington’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption has the largest hand-blown glass window in the world.
  • The man who founded Duncan Hines was born in Bowling Green in 1880.
  • Half of this state is comprised of forests.
  • You can check out a moonbow in Kentucky. Don’t know what a moonbow is?? It is rays of light that are emitted from the moon. Visit the Cumberland Waterfall in Kentucky for the best moonbow views.
  • There are five ways to pronounce Louisville. The pronunciations include Louie-Ville, Luhvul, Loo-A-Ville, Loo-A-Vull, and Luis-Ville.
  • There are more bourbon barrels than people in Kentucky.
  • Fort Knox stores the largest amount of gold in the world.
  • Kentucky’s state beverage is milk.

Laws You Must Obey While on a Family Vacation in Kentucky

  • It is illegal to throw tomatoes, rotten eggs, or flowers at a public speaker in Kentucky.
  • Fines of $100 are possible if you try to take a reptile into a church in Kentucky.
  • It is illegal for a woman to marry one man more than 3 times in Kentucky.
  • When you are in Kentucky, you must shower at least once a year according to the law.

Garlic has been around for at least six thousand years. It has come quite a distance from its native Asia. This pungent seasoning adds quite the flavor to many different types of cuisine. People following the Mediterranean diet use garlic the most while cooking. If you don’t cook with garlic, attending a garlic festival can help you find ways to add this ingredient to many of your dishes.

China ships the most garlic worldwide. However, South Korea, India, Russia, and Egypt ship it out as well. Many people choose to eat lots of garlic, because it is a known source of vitamins A, B-1, and C. It is also full of magnesium, calcium, and iron. This smelly herb can lower cholesterol and high blood pressure, while also allowing a person to overcome colds and fatigue.

While you may use garlic for some of your daily cooking, you may not know everything you could about this amazing superfood. This is where the many different local garlic festivals come into play.

National Garlic Day is in April. However, many garlic festivals are not held on that day. This means you can enjoy a garlic festival or two throughout the year as you travel for a culinary family vacation.

Garlic Festivals to Visit During a Culinary Family Vacation

Old Mistick Village Annual Garlic Festival

Garlic Festivals to Visit During a Culinary Family Vacation - Olde Mistick Village in Mystic CT

Attending the Old Mistick Village Annual Garlic Festival in Mystic, Connecticut is quite fun. You will find everything garlic related in Olde Mistick Village.

Farmers bring garlic, and fresh produce, to sell, while local restaurants serve up some tasty foods filled with garlic. Add in all the shopping opportunities and you will have a day-long event to keep you busy.

Stop into Clyde’s Cider Mill to watch apple cider being made. Then grab a gallon or two to take back home with you. Or drink while eating a slice or two of pizza from Mystic Pizza.

Midwest Garlic Festival

The Midwest Garlic Festival is in Terrapin Park in Elizabeth, Illinois. This free event allows you to purchase garlic from local farmers, as well as the fresh produce they bring.

There are many food vendors sharing how to prepare different foods with garlic. Many of those foods are for sale.

Music plays in the background, as you are wandering around, so do not be surprised if you start dancing with others who are in attendance. Although, your kids may roll their eyes, as you dance with strangers during your family vacation!

Maine’s Garlic Festival

Maine’s Garlic Festival is at Lake George Regional Park. When you are not enjoying the garlic and other foods, you can spend time playing a few games or listening to music. There is also an art exhibit to wander through before you leave.

I can easily add this garlic festival to your itinerary for your family vacation in Maine.

Gilroy Garlic Festival

Garlic Festivals to Visit During a Culinary Family Vacation - Gilroy Garlic Festival in California

The Gilroy Garlic Festival is at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, California. This outdoor festival offers more than two tons of garlic within the food that is served. There are also three stages of live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, and a children’s area.

Of course, there are so many other activities you can do with your family while you vacation in this area of California. Allow me to personalize your itinerary, so you create memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Want to experience a culinary family vacation internationally? Check out these festivals in Ireland!

Minnesota Garlic Festival

The Minnesota Garlic Festival is on the McLeod Country Fairgrounds. This is a family-friendly event that is full of garlic, food, and fun!

The farmers within this state grow more than seventy different varieties of garlic and it is used in everything there, including ice cream. You may want to skip tasting the ice cream, but honestly, you should try it! You may be surprised at just how good it is.

Check out the culinary scene in Portland during your next family vacation.

China Bend Winery Garlic Faire

The China Bend Winery Garlic Faire is at the China Bend Winery in Kettle Falls, Washington. This garlic fair has been going strong for more than twenty years now. When you are not tasting the garlic, you can listen to music and drink some fine wine.

And since this is a winery, the kids will have plenty of space to play and have fun on their own during your family vacation.

Asheville WNC Garlic Fest

The Asheville WNC Garlic Fest is at Sow True Seed in Asheville, North Carolina. Garlic ice cream, garlic fudge, garlic cookies, and honey fermented with garlic are available to eat.

Make sure you check out all the food trucks, so you can find the garlic foods you love the most!

Click here to see all the amazing things you can do with family during a vacation in Asheville, NC.

These are only some of the local garlic festivals in the US throughout the year. While none of them are on National Garlic Day, you can still enjoy garlic when you attend any of them. If you are looking for something different on your next culinary family vacation, you may want to visit an area near one of these garlic festivals. I can personalize your itinerary, so you have an amazing family vacation while making memories with the people you love!

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip?

Are you always searching for an excuse to stay in your pj’s a little longer?? I am always ready to spend a few extra hours in my pajamas! And now we have an excuse with National Family PJ Day. I love having time to spend with my kids, as we all hang out in our pj’s talking about whatever I can get them to open up about.  Did you know National Family PJ Day was created by Soma back in 2019? Let’s celebrate this newer family national holiday with a little history of pajamas. And how you can truly embrace National PJ Day with your family!

National Family PJ Day: Let’s Celebrate!

The History of Pajamas

National Family PJ Day: Let's Celebrate! - Girls in Matching PJs

It is not completely known when pajamas became a prominent fixture in the world. Some people think it was back around 1870 when British colonials started wearing them to bed instead of the traditional nightshirt.

Pajamas became even more fashionable in the early 1900s. Ribbons and lace were added to pajamas at this time. Sophisticated pajamas were created in the 1920s. Pajamas have evolved even more since that time.

I mean, you know all the options we have now for pajamas. Compare that to the old nightshirt, and then let me know why celebrating National Family PJ Day is much more comfortable nowadays!

What to Do When Celebrating National Family PJ Day

National Family PJ Day: Let's Celebrate! - Great Migration in Masai-Mara

There are so many things you can do with your family as you all rock your jammies. You can begin the day by preparing breakfast and eating together. Then read a book out loud or play a board game or two.

Add in watching movies, binge-watching Netflix, or enjoying a picnic lunch, and you have memories in the making.

One of my favorite things to do on our pajama days is plan exciting family vacations. I have taken multiple family vacations over the years. And I’m telling you, each one is better than the last! The memories I make with my family during these vacations are amazing. I truly cherish all these memories, and I look forward to the ones we will make together in the future.

I have traveled to Kenya, Norway, Alaska, and so many other destinations for our family vacations.

Consider Discussing These Family Vacation Options on National Family PJ Day

You may be wondering where you can go for yours. Well, the sky is the limit!

As a travel advisor, I can make all your family vacation dreams come true. Even if you are planning on heading out on vacation with teens who prefer eye rolls over saying anything nice. All you need to do is share your dreams with me, and before you know it, you will be making memories with your family.

Consider these vacation destinations for your next family vacation:

Are you intrigued by all the possibilities waiting for you during your next family vacation? This Christmas, when your entire family is in matching pajamas, talk about your next family vacation adventure. Decide where you all want to go or what you all want to do. As your travel advisor, I can tackle the hard work after that and turn those dreams into memories.

Check out my tips for traveling with teens. Trust me, it’s easier than you think!

You don’t even need to wait that long. On National Family PJ Day, or Thanksgiving, have this conversation. This will ensure you don’t need to wait as long to enjoy the memories you will all make together.

Older kids scattered all around the country? Check out my tips for making family vacations possible!

So, are you ready to plan a fabulous family vacation on National Family PJ Day or the next time you are all together?

The fall weather is arriving in many parts of the US. If you are not a fan of the cold, you may be dreaming about your next family beach vacation. Especially if you prefer to sink your toes in the sand instead of a pile of leaves or a snow pile. Thankfully, you can start planning your next family beach vacation now. One of the best times to enjoy sandy beaches is on National Beach Day, which is August 30. However, you do not need to limit your vacation options to that single date. Instead, you can choose to visit one of the best beaches during the vacation dates that work best for your family. Today, I am sharing the best beaches for family vacations.

National Beach Day – Best Beaches for a Family Vacation

Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand – An Amazing Destination for Celebrating National Beach Day

National Beach Day – Best Beaches for a Family Vacation - Hot Water Beach in New Zealand

Hot Water Beach is one of the best beaches to visit for family vacations. There are volcanoes near this beach. And those volcanoes created large underground reservoirs that are now filled with extremely hot water. The water slowly seeps to the surface, still feeling quite hot when it gets there.

Your family can easily access these hot springs during low tide. I recommend taking a shovel with you, so you can create your own mini spa in the middle of paradise.

Oh, and the seasons in New Zealand are opposite what we have here in the US. Therefore, you will love a family vacation there on National Beach Day. Since it will be winter, the hot water at this beach will feel amazing!

Byron Bay in Australia

Surfing is popular at this beach in Australia. In between waves, your family can wander through the bookstores. There are plenty of cafes for grabbing a bite to eat. And pubs for when you need a pint or two.

I recommend visiting with your family during the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Yes, it will be more crowded. But the experience, and music, are worth the memories you will make with your family.

Arashi Beach in Aruba

Arashi Beach is located on the northern side of Aruba. The sands are basically untouched since ships are no longer sailing too close to this area.

One of the best things to do at this beach is snorkeling. There is a four-hundred-foot German freighter wreck not too far from the shoreline. Venture out to the shipwreck with your family and see what you can all discover together.

Punalu’u Beach in Hawaii – Celebrate National Beach Day in Paradise

Punalu'u Beach in Hawaii - A Black Sand Beach

There are multiple beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii. But none of them will compare to Punalu’u Beach.

Yes, you will need to walk for approximately twenty minutes along a wooded dirt trail to reach this undeveloped beach. The black sand you reach will be worth every step. And possibly the moans and groans from the kids who may not want to walk that far.

Snorkeling is a popular family activity at this beach. Make sure you take your gear, so you can be out amongst the turtles, dolphins, and whale sharks.

Punalu’u Beach is an amazing beach to visit for National Beach Day. However, there really is no bad time to visit paradise on any of the Hawaiian Islands during a family vacation.

Diani Beach in Kenya

Diani Beach is more than twelve miles long. Palm trees line the sandy shoreline and provide just enough shade.

Kite surfing is popular at this beach. Lessons are available if your family wants to learn.

Oh, and while there are hotels and supermarkets nearby, there is one other thing that is so much better. Monkeys are everywhere on this beach. So, be prepared for an encounter or two.

Imagine taking a few family photos with monkeys dotting the background. Think about the comments you will get if you send that out as your next holiday card!

Trunk Bay in St. John in the US Virgin Islands – No Passport Required to Celebrate National Beach Day at Trunk Bay

St. John is a beautiful destination on its own. But when you visit Trunk Bay, you will discover a beach that looks better than the postcard pictures in a store.

The sand is soft. This is perfect for sinking your toes in the sand. And the blue water will add to your fun in the sun. There isn’t a better place to celebrate National Beach Day!

I recommend heading into the water and snorkeling. All the things you see underwater are labeled with plaques. That means you will know what everything is during this family adventure.

Natadola Beach in Fiji

Horseback Riding on the Beach at Sunset

It can be difficult to choose the best Fiji Island for your family’s vacation. But if you happen to be near Natadola Beach, you must spend the day there.

You can swim all day and all night. Although, I recommend taking a horseback ride at sunset. It really adds to the experience. And the memories you will make.

Sun Island Beach in Maldives

Celebrities and honeymooners can often be spotted on this beach in the Maldives. However, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a fabulous family vacation there.

You will discover an amazing coral reef nearby. So, grab your snorkeling gear and check out the marine life.

Matira Beach in Bora Bora in Tahiti

Matira Beach is such a perfect beach. It is a little hard to believe it is real.

Your family can spend hours relaxing on the sand during your beach vacation. Or you can search for black pearls. Check out the World War II memorabilia. And feed the sharks.

Whatever you decide to do to make memories during this family vacation.

Anse Source d’Argent in La Digue in Seychelles

You will find this beach in Seychelles on the island of La Digue. The white and pink sand creates a sparkling destination for sinking your toes in the sand.

The water is nice and calm at Anse Source d’Argent. It is the perfect destination for swimming and snorkeling. Oh, and you will see many other families celebrating National Beach Day if you decide to visit then.

Copacabana Beach in Brazil

Copacabana Beach is one of the most iconic beaches in the world. It is also the place to be on New Year’s Eve every year.

That one night of the year is when the beach is packed with no room to move, as the party continues all night long.

Although, this beach is crowded most of the time. Keep that in mind if you decide it is the best beach to visit for your next family vacation. Especially if you visit on National Beach Day.

Mohegan Bluffs in New Shoreham in Rhode Island

You must plan your family beach vacation at Mohegan Bluffs carefully if you want fun in the sun and warm weather. This beach in on Block Island. So, you must take a ferry to get there.

When you reach the top of the bluffs, there are one hundred forty-one steps down to the sand. Yes, it is a lot of work for a beach day. But it is worth it to spend a little time away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland – Perfect Place to Sink Your Toes in Black Sand for National Beach Day

National Beach Day – Best Beaches for a Family Vacation - Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland

Iceland has a few incredible beaches. Reynisfjara happens to be one of the best beaches to visit for National Beach Day.

It has deep black sand, offshore rock formations, and a massive cave. Nearby is the village of Vik. That village is where the Icelandic Lava Show is held.

Your family can also go on glacier hikes and take ice cave treks in Vik. Talk about a family vacation with lots of different family activities for making memories!

These are some of the best beaches to visit around the world for National Beach Day. One of these beaches will be perfect for sinking your toes in the sand during a family vacation!

So, are you ready to have a little fun in the sun and visit one of these best beaches during a family vacation?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

And if you are not quite ready to book a family vacation at one of these best beaches, you can sign up for my newsletter here. This will ensure you continue to receive all the travel information I share in the future.

Chocolate is a sweet treat many of us simply cannot resist. Therefore, I know you are more than ready to help me celebrate National Chocolate Day! If you are like me, you have your favorite types of chocolate candies and desserts. But where should you take a family vacation when you want to try different types of chocolate? Numerous destinations are known for their local chocolate. Today, I am going to share more about the best destinations to taste chocolate. As well as a little history about chocolate. I recommend grabbing a piece or two of chocolate to eat before you finish reading.

Let’s Celebrate National Chocolate Day

The History of Chocolate

Let's Celebrate National Chocolate Day - Chocolate Drinks

Chocolate has been consumed since the times of Mesoamerica. However, scientists are still trying to prove that point. They are getting close, though.

Anthropologists from the University of Pennsylvania found cacao residue on pottery excavated in Honduras in 2007. The pottery dates back to 1400 BCE. Cacao fruit was fermented to make alcoholic beverages.

Chocolate back then was quite bitter. Sweetened chocolate was consumed after the discovery of America.

Hernando Cortes was one of the first explorers to consume chocolate drinks. He thought it was too bitter. However, in Spain, people began to mix it with cane sugar or honey to make it sweeter.

Chocolate drinks were a fashionable drink during the 17th century. A Dutch chemist created powdered chocolate in 1828.

Joseph Fry invented the chocolate bar in 1847. That was when he realized he could create a chocolate bar by mixing melted cacao butter with Dutch cocoa.

Cadbury began making chocolate candies in 1868. The least flavorful cacao bean varieties are used for today’s chocolate treats. This is to try to keep the chocolate treats more affordable.

Where to Take a Family Vacation to Indulge in Chocolate

You can easily find chocolate no matter where you go for your family vacation. However, if you want to indulge in some of the best chocolate in celebration of National Chocolate Day, I recommend you consider these destinations.

Switzerland

Switzerland has long been known for its delicious chocolate. One of the oldest chocolate factories in Switzerland, and the world, is Maison Cailler. From the outside, this factory looks like a manor house. But inside is where all the magic occurs.

Other must-visit chocolate factories and stores in Switzerland include Sprungli, Teuscher, and Lindt. I recommend adding them all to your itinerary for celebrating National Chocolate Day with your family.

Brussels, Belgium: A Popular National Chocolate Day Destination

Let's Celebrate National Chocolate Day - Godiva Chocolate Store in Belgium

Brussels has earned the nickname Chocolate Capital of the World. There are more chocolate shops per square foot in this city than anywhere else in the world. Needless to say, you will always find chocolate when you need it in Brussels!

Godiva and Leonidas are both located in Brussels. A visit to the Musee du Cacao et du Chocolate is a must for chocolate lovers too.

Let me carefully plan your National Chocolate Day itinerary for your family vacation in Brussels. This will ensure you won’t miss any of the delicious chocolate during your visit.

Want to indulge in chocolate closer to home? Check out where to find the best chocolate in Baltimore!

Paris, France

Gourmet foods are everywhere in the City of Love. While many families grab croissants and baguettes during their vacation in Paris, you may want to focus on the chocolate. There are more than three hundred chocolate shops in this city.

Dark chocolate is Paris’ specialty. Keep this in mind as you sign up for one of the many chocolate walking tours on National Chocolate Day.

The Chocolate Valley in Tuscany, Italy

You may want to take a family vacation in Italy to try all the fine wines. I recommend checking out the chocolate when you are there too!

The Chocolate Valley is between Pisa, Florence, and Montecatini. There are multiple gourmet shops and factories that sell lots of chocolate.

Vestri is one of the best places to try chocolate in this area. The wait to get in is always long but worth every second.

Don’t forget about National Chocolate Cupcake Day!

Cologne, Germany

Learning about chocolate is simple at the Imhoff Stollwerck Museum. Hans Imhoff opened this museum. Inside the museum, you can learn all about the history of chocolate. The most popular exhibit is the massive chocolate fountain.

Make sure you take the time to stop at the Stollwerck Chocolate Company to buy chocolate. This company was the second largest supplier of chocolate sent to the US. You will need to plan carefully if you want visit here for National Chocolate Day.

St. Lucia: A Warm National Chocolate Day Destination

No one really thinks all their chocolate dreams can come true down in the Caribbean. However, when you take a family vacation in St. Lucia, you can experience an exotic chocolate holiday.

A few of the resorts have their own cocoa plantations. Those resorts focus on numerous chocolate events your entire family will enjoy. I recommend attending one of those events around National Chocolate Day.

These are some of the best places to take a family vacation when you want to experience all things chocolate. If none of these destinations interest you, I can share a few others with you during our planning session.

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation to celebrate National Chocolate Day?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Let’s Celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day

The History of Boston Cream Pie

Let's Celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day - Omni Parker House in Boston

Before I get to the history of Boston cream pie, you must know that this pie isn’t really a pie. It is a cake that has a creamy filling in between the layers. Don’t worry, it is still yummy and worth eating!

Check out these actual pies for National Pie Day.

Anyway, Boston cream pie was first made by M. Sanzian in 1856. He was the chef at the Parker House Hotel in Boston, MA. Since he made the pie at a Boston restaurant, it made sense to add the word Boston to the beginning of the pie’s, well, cake’s name.

The original Boston cream pie was layers of cake and pastry cream. Rum was brushed on the top of each layer. The chocolate icing was added to the top. And slivered almonds were placed around the sides.

No one is quite sure why everyone accepted that this was a pie and not a cake. It could be because Boston cream pie is similar to Washington Pie, which was also actually a cake. Boston cream pie was basically an updated version.

Where to Eat Boston Cream Pie

Let's Celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day - Boston Cream Donuts

You can find Boston cream pie, and donuts, in many restaurants and bakeries around the country. And yet, if you walk into some bakeries and restaurants in Boston, they won’t have the pies or donuts you are searching for.

Don’t worry! I won’t leave you stranded without Boston cream pie or donuts while you are on a family vacation in Boston!

When it comes to Boston cream donuts, the best place to go is Union Square Donuts. And if you are not in the mood for a Boston cream donut, they have many other kinds. I recommend the caramel pumpkin cheesecake donut, sea salt whiskey caramel donut, or the peanut butter and jelly donut. Or get them all and have a blast eating breakfast all day long!

The Parker House Hotel is now the Omni Parker House. It is still the best place to eat a slice of Boston cream pie while on a family vacation.

Use my handy travel guide while starting to plan your family vacation in Boston.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to vacation in Boston and eat a slice of Boston cream pie! I’m not sure if I will get there to celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day. But I will get there soon. After all, I want to visit some of the best bars in Boston. Until then, I may consider making my own Boston cream pie at home.

I recommend trying this recipe for Boston Cream Pie:

Boston Cream Pie

Oh, and this Boston cream pie martini looks good too!

Check out all the states’ desserts if you don’t want to make Boston Cream Pie.

Let’s raise our glasses and forks and celebrate National Boston Cream Pie Day in style! Although, that leads me to a question…

National Clam Chowder Day is held every year on February 25th. This yummy soup is made in multiple different ways. However, out of all your options, you usually must choose from either New England clam chowder or Manhattan clam chowder. There are other clam chowder soup options, though, with Delaware clam chowder and Florida clam chowders being high up on the list.

What is Clam Chowder?

Clam chowder is a soup that contains both clams and broth. Depending on the variety of clam chowder soup you are either making or eating, you may find that it contains potatoes, onions, celery, bacon, pork, or tomatoes.

In my experience, most people are picky about which types of clam chowder they will eat if they will eat it at all.

National Clam Chowder Day - Manhattan Red Clam Chowder in a Bowl

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is almost always declared one of the best places to eat a hot bowl of clam chowder soup. It’s practically a tradition to eat this soup all year round in New England. You can find multiple restaurants in Boston, and the rest of the state of Massachusetts, serving up New England clam chowder. But Union Oyster House has been serving this creamy soup to customers since 1826.

Before you enjoy your clam chowder in Boston, you may want to head out on a whale-watching adventure.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Yes, another destination in Massachusetts made the list of the best places to enjoy clam chowder! You may not think that Cape Cod is the best destination to celebrate National Clam Chowder Day towards the end of February. And you are probably right about that. But if you can’t get away on a family vacation right now, you can always add this to your list of places to take a vacation later this summer. After all, who says you can’t enjoy clam chowder in the middle of August?!

If you do decide to venture out to Cape Cod to enjoy a little clam chowder, check out Sea Street Café in Hyannis.

Monterey, California

Fresh seafood is also plentiful in California, so it shouldn’t be surprising that a foodie destination like Monterey offers some amazing clam chowder. Almost every restaurant in Monterey serves this creamy soup, but the Old Fisherman’s Grotto is your best option. This restaurant is located at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf. They serve their clam chowder in a bread bowl, although you can ask for a regular cup or bowl if you don’t want the bread. Make sure you grab a table that looks out towards the crystal-clear water so you don’t miss out on the gorgeous views.

Cedar Key, Florida

If you have been craving a bowl of spicy clam chowder, you must take a trip down to Cedar Key. This small town is where Tony’s Seafood Restaurant is located. The owner, Eric Jungklaus, created this amazing clam chowder, which won the Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off in Rhode Island three years straight.

I don’t know about you, but I am more than ready to pack my bags to taste a little clam chowder in these destinations! However, I am not sure if I can make it in time for National Clam Chowder Day, so I may stick to making this Potato Bacon Clam Chowder recipe for my family.

Wisconsin may be a state known for its cheese production. But that doesn’t mean your family won’t find thrilling non-cheese-related family activities to enjoy when you choose to vacation there. The acres of farmland filled with cows lead to amazing adventures at every turn. As you explore the countryside, you will discover so many different family-friendly activities. These family activities are perfect for celebrating National Wisconsin Day or any other day of the year. The hardest part will be determining which activities are best for your next family vacation in Wisconsin.

Celebrate National Wisconsin Day with These 10 Family Friendly Activities

Hike the Ice Age Trail

As a parent, you have heard about the Ice Age. Well, at least the five Ice Age movies that have been released since 2002. In the state of Wisconsin, there is an actual Ice Age Trail that your family will love to explore. Your family might not want to do the entire one thousand miles. But even a few miles will have you all going back in time as you explore glacial features. Spending time reconnecting while hiking this trail is simple. Especially when you are all staring at the plethora of wildlife, you will spot along the way.

It is possible to hike the Ice Age Trail at any time of the year. Even on National Wisconsin Day! But if you want to experience the best this trail has to offer, it is better to visit during the fall. It is during that time of the year when the foliage turns the area into a bright colorful destination.

Experience Nature at Kettle Moraine State Forest

Kettle Moraine State Forest is massive. So massive that it is actually split into six different sections, with each section having its own name. This is the very best state park in Wisconsin. There are so many family activities to experience throughout the park, so your family will never be bored. Imagine exploring the hidden gems of this park as your family hikes, skis, horseback rides, or even bikes through different areas.

One of my favorite locations within the Kettle Moraine State Forest is the Parnell Tower Trail. That is where Parnell Tower is located. And climbing up to the top of that tower offers spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Go Snowmobiling

Okay, so a family vacation in Wisconsin during the winter is a must if you want to add snowmobiling to your itinerary. And let me tell you, your family won’t be disappointed on any of the six hundred miles of the Eagle River Snowmobile Trails. If you are visiting an area that is not close to those trails, you will still find plenty of trail-riding options! I can help you determine which snowmobile trails are best in the area you are vacationing in. After all, hitting the trails on a snowmobile is definitely one of the top family-friendly activities in the state!

Bike Ride Along the Elroy-Sparta Trail

Bike rides through the countryside in Wisconsin are an excellent way to spend a family vacation. While there are plenty of bike trails to consider, a personal favorite is the Elroy-Sparta Trail. This trail used to be a railway, so you never know what your family will discover along the entire thirty-two miles.

If the length of this bike trail is not long enough for your family, you have options! You can easily continue on the Hillsboro State Trail, Omaha Trail, or the Great River State Trail.

Conquer the Menominee River on a Raft

Whitewater rafting is an exciting activity that most families do not think about when they are planning a vacation in Wisconsin. As a travel advisor, I know to make sure I mention this type of thrilling activity so families like yours do not miss out on any of the fun! The Menominee River is the perfect place to go white-water rafting while on a family vacation in Wisconsin.

Everyone in your family will enjoy conquering the rapids on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Now, if your family doesn’t love the water that much, or you are just too afraid to do something this daring, I have a solution. There are sections of the river that are gentle. Those are the areas you can spend hours at as you kayak and relax with your family.

Explore the Cave of the Mounds

National Wisconsin Day - Cave of the Mounds

You can explore the Cave of the Mounds when you take a family vacation in Madison, Wisconsin. The best way to experience this part of Wisconsin is to wander through the cave. This is not an ideal adventure if anyone in your family is claustrophobic. However, if you all don’t mind small spaces, the rock formations and river streams will take your breath away.

There is no better place to relax than deep down in the cave. And imagine the conversations you will have with your partner and children as you all contemplate how the cave has changed over the course of hundreds of years.

Explore the Sea Caves

The Sea Caves in Wisconsin are located off the Apostle Islands. These caves are different than the ones I mentioned above because they are partially underwater. Each cave was formed from the strong currents of the water. Kayaking to each sea cave around these islands is the best way for your family to experience them. However, if being out on the water is not enough for everyone, you can also explore each individual island. Every island offers spectacular views, soft sandy beaches, and sometimes a historic lighthouse.

Check Out the Wildlife at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

Families that love animals will want to spend part of their vacation in Wisconsin checking out the wildlife at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. This is where numerous animals end up when they are sick and injured. Your day can be spent hiking the trails that lead to the different animal habitats. As you are walking around, make sure you feed the animals from the available food bags. That will be the highlight of your visit, at least according to your children.

Search for Trolls in Mount Horeb

Troll lovers will love visiting Mount Horeb during a family vacation in Wisconsin. Trolls are everywhere in this town, but you must keep your eyes open if you want to spot them all. I recommend beginning by wandering through the downtown area. This is an excellent way to spot quite a few trolls in a short amount of time. It is said there are more trolls out in the forest. But not too many have been spotted out there as of yet.

Enjoy the Rushing Waterfalls at Amnicon Falls State Park

Hiking to waterfalls is a favorite activity for many families. Therefore, if it is on your list of family-friendly activities, I recommend making sure you add Amnicon Falls State Park to your itinerary when on vacation in Wisconsin. Rushing water from multiple waterfalls enters the swimming holes below. Your kids can spend hours swimming in those holes while you and your partner relax and enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle of real life. Make sure you all take some time to walk across the covered bridge over the falls. The views are incredible and will likely spark a conversation or two.

These are the 10 family-friendly activities you should consider when it is time to celebrate National Wisconsin Day. Whether you choose to take a family vacation in Wisconsin on this day, or another day of the year, at least you know your family will have numerous activities available. And don’t worry, because as your travel advisor, I can make sure every must-do family activity is on your itinerary!

Have you ever taken the time to explore the state of Texas? If you have never taken a family vacation to see some of the fabulous Texas destinations, you may want to do so sooner than later. After all, National Texas Day is held on February 1st each year. So, now is an excellent time to either travel to Texas or plan a family adventure there in the future. I have quite a few favorite Texas attractions. And no, the Alamo is not one that I will be listing. If you have teenagers as I do, I can tell you that I can’t get my teens excited about visiting the Alamo. So, unless you know that your teen is 200% for a visit there, I will not be putting it on your itinerary. I will stick to the other amazing family-friendly activities and attractions this state is known for!

Check Out These Fabulous Texas Attractions for National Texas Day

Natural Bridge Caverns

There are approximately three thousand known cave networks within the state of Texas. However, only seven of those caves are open to the public. Your family will love exploring any of those caves. I recommend the Natural Bridge Caverns, which are in New Braunfels, Texas. When you enter the caves, you will be met with limestone formations and sparkling pools. Everything is well-lit, so your family can see all the intricate details. When you are finished exploring the caves, your family can go ziplining or wander through the maze.

Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park

There are fourteen National Parks in the state of Texas. The two best parks to take your family to though are Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Hiking is the most popular activity at the Guadalupe Mountains. There are more than eighty miles of trails, so you should be able to find one that is perfect for your family.

Most people will want to hike to the summit of Guadalupe Peak. That area is considered the Top of Texas and offers gorgeous views. But it is a strenuous hike that is eight and a half miles round trip. There is a three-thousand-foot elevation gain too. And the entire trip can take at least six to eight hours. I basically only recommend tackling this hiking adventure if your family has lots of hiking experience.

While there are multiple hiking trails over at Big Bend, your family may be more interested in seeing the massive canyons created in the ancient limestone. It is also a wonderful park to visit at night to see the stars because the nights are truly dark with no other lights for miles.

NASA Space Center Houston

National Texas Day - NASA Space Center

Most kids are interested in space or at least mildly curious about it. So, why not add a visit to the NASA Space Center Houston to the itinerary for your family vacation in Texas? Everyone in your group will love the hands-on experiences with real engineers and astronauts. You can try on an astronaut suit, see different moon rocks, and check out the original Mission Control that monitored Apollo 11’s mission to the moon. I recommend making sure you take a ride in the space simulator before you leave too.

Texas Air and Space Museum

If your kids can’t get enough when it comes to space, we can add a visit to the Texas Air and Space Museum to your itinerary. This museum is in Amarillo. There are multiple planes on display. And everyone will have the chance to “fly” their own plane during your visit.

River Walk

The River Walk in San Antonio is an excellent place to spend the latter parts of your days while on vacation in Texas. You can wander around to check out the shops, galleries, and restaurants. But I recommend seeing the River Walk from a different vantage point. I always find hiring a river taxi and cruising down the river is a fantastic way to see the sights while relaxing at the same time.

Kemah Boardwalk

Over on Galveston Bay, you will discover the Kemah Boardwalk. This boardwalk is reminiscent of the boardwalks you would normally find on the East Coast of the US. The kids will love playing all the midway games before riding the sixty-five-foot Ferris wheel and other rides. You will love the views you get while relaxing, as your kids stay occupied for hours!

These are some of the fabulous Texas attractions you must check out for National Texas Day. Of course, your family can also spend time relaxing on the beach on South Padre Island, visiting a dude ranch, and attending one of the numerous rodeos in the state. There are so many options when you choose to plan a family vacation in Texas!

Culture is everywhere in downtown Louisville! On a Louisville family road trip, or a Louisville vacation with friends, you must check out the museums and art galleries. There are many you can add to your list. However, the two must-see museums in Louisville are the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Each one offers a glimpse into baseball and horse racing. Those are two things that this city is known for!

Visit the Two Must-See Museums During Your Next Louisville Road Trip

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

The Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is a baseball museum every fan will love. A visit there will have you learning about the role the Louisville slugger bat played throughout the history of the game. As you walk through this baseball museum, you will see many items on display.

A few favorite items include:

  • The Signature Wall
  • The Big Bat and Glove
  • The Bat Vault
  • Must-See Bats

There are many other options other than seeing the exhibits at the Louisville Slugger Museum. You can add a tour of the factory to your list of things to do in Louisville. The tour begins with a short movie. From there, you walk through the factory to see how the bats are made. A souvenir mini bat is your gift at the end of the tour.

Kentucky Derby Museum

Must-See in Louisville - Churchill Downs Race Track

One of the best attractions in Louisville is the Kentucky Derby Museum. This isn’t shocking, since the Kentucky Derby is a name known in households around the world. This entire museum is dedicated to horse racing. However, the greatest amount of information inside is dedicated to the Kentucky Derby.

There are two floors at this Louisville museum. Each floor offers interactive displays your family will love. You can easily tour the museum on your own. However, to enhance your experience, I recommend taking a guided tour of the track. The Historic Walking Tour will take you around the Churchill Downs Racetrack. It lasts for thirty minutes. The Behind the Scenes Walking Tour is much longer at an hour and a half. But it takes you behind the scenes, so you see so much more at the track.

There are multiple things you can do during a Louisville road trip. These two museums in Louisville are must-see attractions that your family will love. So, if you have a baseball museum fan, or a horse fan, you must add these Louisville attractions to your list.  Afterwards, you can always check out the best bourbon and whiskey distilleries in Louisville

Are you ready to plan a family vacation in Louisville and visit these two museums?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

And if you aren’t ready to plan your next family vacation, you can always sign up for my newsletter. This way you can continue to see all the travel information I share.
